The Biggest Lottery Wins in History
You are not human if you haven’t wondered for at least once in your lifetime what you will do if you won the lottery. The only way to find out is if you actually play international lotto
and if you never give up on your dreams. Because as unlikely as it may seem, 100% of the world’s lottery winners in history bought a lottery ticket even when they doubted their chances of winning.
In this article we will take a look at the 3 biggest lottery wins in history. Not surprisingly, all 3 lottery prizes were won in the US. This is where the biggest lottery game organizers operate and where the biggest sums of money can be won.
1. US Powerball - $1.58 billion
This is the only win in history which has gone over $1 billion. When the lottery results
were announced it was evident that there were actually three winners. One ticket was sold in Tennessee, one was sold in Florida and the last one was sold in California.
It must be noted however, that in the USA all lottery game winners are obliged to pay taxes on their winnings, and the sums which were announced were before taxation was done.
In reality, the three lucky winners received around $330 million each. These mind-boggling sums are enough for all US players not to even think about their country’s taxation policy.
2. US Mega Millions - $656 million
The second largest lottery win in history happened in March 2012 when there were once again three winning tickets. This time the tickets were sold in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas. What was interesting was the fact that the Maryland winning ticket was held by three people working in Maryland’s education system. They all agreed that teaching others is rewarding, but not as rewarding as playing the lottery.
The winners from Maryland were the only ones who decided not to be anonymous because the winners from Kansas and Illinois didn’t disclose their identities to the public. This is because some US states and jurisdictions oblige lottery winners to disclose their identities whereas others give them the option to stay anonymous.
Each of the winners won around $158 million before taxes, or around $110 million after the process of taxation.
3. US Powerball - $648 million
The third biggest lottery win in history again came courtesy of the US Powerball jackpot, but this time there were two lucky winners. Both of them decided to reveal their identities which made the story more relatable and it got much more publicity than some other lottery wins.
The first winner was Ira Curry from Stone Mountain, Georgia and the other winner was Steve Tran, a delivery driver who lived in Northern California. Ira Curry was quick to redeem her prize and went public with her win immediately. However, after a week or two, she went completely off the radar, probably realizing that she was not used to the media spotlight.
