The Cardinals, in order to avoid starting Martinez on 3 day rest, have called up Mike Mayers from AAA. He has been good in the Cards farm system (splitting the season between AA and AAA), but starting in the majors against the Dodgers will be a different beast alltogether. His combined ERA in AA and AAA this season is 2.62 in 106.2 innings of work. His WHIP is around 1.2 and he doesn't seem to be a strikeout machine (86 strikeuts versus 36 walks). If he gets anxious and starts looking for the corners and missing the zone he might be in too deep before he has the chance to settle.
The Dodgers are sending Kazmir to the mound. Kazmir, who has found form in his latest starts, is 8-3 with 4.30 ERA, but is 2-0 with 2.23 ERA in his last three starts. He also combined this with .213 opponent average and WHIP of 1.00. An early lead provided by his offense would go a long way for him and i think the Dodgers are in for a good win today.
