Gio Gonzales is a much better pitcher than Matt Cain at the moment. Gonzales has allowed two or less earned runs in his last three starts, while striking out 13 in 18 innings. His main strength isn't his strikeout power. He rather combines the nasty lefthanded delivery of the fastball, curveball and changeup to get quick outs via groundouts. His opponent batting average, after two near .300 months in June and May, is back down to .221, which is a good sign of improving form.
Cain is 2-6 with 5.95 ERA so far this season. He has not thrown more than 5 innings for more than two months and there will be question marks around his conditioning and ability to command the strike zone. Even as it is, with the limited amount of innings he pitched in 2015 and so far in 2016, opponent batters average is above .300 and he shouldn't be an obstacle the NL East main contenders can't overcome.
