Washington Capitals - Pittsburgh Penguins (lost)
Pittsburgh Penguins are the defending champions. On the way to the Stanley Cup trophy last season, the Penguins among others also defeated Washington Capitals. It was QF series back then which Pittsburgh won it 4:2. The Capitals have had the home ice advantage but thanks to one road victory, the Penguins prevailed.
In this new season both are again among top teams of the Eastern Conference. Currently only Columbus Blue Jackets are above them on the standings. But given the fact Blue Jackets just entered in bad run after 16 games long winning streak, it would not be surprising to one of these two very soon take a lead on the East. At this point both, Capitals and Penguins are in their own winning streaks. Washington has won the last six, Pittsburgh the last five games. Overall, both sits at 26 victories with note Pittsburgh has played one game less.
As for home/road record, Washington hold very good 15-6 record at home while Pittsburgh on the road 8-9. In any case, I think we have case here for underdog road victory.
BTW, this is not the first time they meet each other after mentioned last season's playoffs. As a matter fact, this is the third game between them in this regular season. They split the first two, both winning the game at home. Firstly, the Penguins took the penalty shutout 3:2 (it was the opening game of the 2016/17 for both) but then the Capitals here in Washington simply crashed the Penguins with huge 7:1. Such results simply must motivate the defending champions and I like this time the small underdog price on them.
If we take a look on H2H for a little bit longer period of time, Pittsburgh Penguins are holding the nice edge over Washington Capitals by winning 55% of the mutual meetings over the past 15 years.
For end a little bit more from the most recent form of both. Washington lately was winning mostly thanks to good defense. They have allowed only seven goals in last five games and only one in last three. But Pittsburgh lately was amazing in scoring goals. This team found the net even 22 times in last five games (4.4 per game).
Between Capitals' defense and Penguins' offense, this time I'll opt for Pittsburgh Penguins.
