Oldest Japanese Soccer League Player - Beating the Odds of Football

23-01-2017

Kazuyoshi Miura, aka King Kazu makes history as the oldest football player in Japan. King Kazu is beating the odds of time and professional sport.

Oldest Japanese Soccer League Player - Beating the Odds of Football

For years, Japanese football has been an impressive place to learn about the game. It’s an exciting take on a wonderful sport, with the technical precision and chess-like style of matches making it an entertaining watch. However, it’s also a nation that is recognized for providing longevity for footballers. When it comes to soccer odds, though, what are the chances of seeing the oldest player ever in Japanese football?

That’s just about to be proven – Kazuyoshi Miura, or King Kazu, has signed a new deal with Yokohama FC. The J. League 2 side have been the Kings home for some time, having played there for over a decade. Signed in 2005, he’s gone on to make over 200 appearances for the club.

While a goal scoring record of less than 1 in 10 might seem paltry for a forward of his class, Miura brings more to the table than just numbers.

For one, he’s one of the most decorated players in the Japanese league system. The fact he plays second division football comes down to age, not talent. With 89 caps and 55 goals for the Samurai Blue, too, he’s proven himself at the top level in a sparkling career.

Now, he’s going to take on another important landmark; he is about to become the oldest player in football history. With his new contract signed in recent days, Miura is now likely to play into his 50s!

Aging with Grace

One of the best parts of the story, too, is that he’s a major part of the Yokohama side. He played 20 games in 2016 alone, and looks set to continue his prolific appearances for the Yokohama outfit. The fact that his upbringing in Brazil, where he played for sides like Santos, Palmeiras and Coritiba, shows where his awesome technique was honed. Add in spells in Croatia, with Dinamo Zagreb, and Genoa in Italy, and this well-travelled veteran of the sport has seen it all.

His experience and his quality in front of goal throughout his career, having scored prolifically for teams such as Kyoto Purple Sanga and Verdy Kawasaki in the past, is invaluable. While a promotion to the top division would likely be a step too far at his age, King Kazu shows no signs of giving up if Yokohama stay in the second tier.

Having been the oldest goal scorer in Japanese football, as well as the oldest player to play in the famous Emperor’s Cup, his legacy continues to impress with a further sign of his longevity. Indeed, he should stand as a testament to players about what can be achieved if you are just willing to work for it!

His incredible spirit and his determination to keep beating the odds of playing soccer at the professional level, has been one of the most impressive stories in the global game. The fact that he’s now set to break the landmark and become the oldest player to take to the field is a fitting next chapter for a player who has given Japanese football so much.

We salute you, King Kazu!
