A Brief Outline of Common Football Betting Terms For The Novice
If you`re new to online betting, and in particular football betting, don’t worry, we’ve all been there and had to learn the ropes. Some of the terms and bets can be somewhat confusing, so I will try and breakdown the popular bets and terms, to offer an insight of what to expect if you`re new to the game.
The simplest betting format – you place a bet on the outcome of the match at 0 minutes full time, either a win or draw. Bets do not count for extra time and/or penalties.
Asian Handicap bet
As it says, the bet you place has a ‘handicap’ to overcome. Each team is given an a + or a - on the potential scoreline. There are only two results possible and if the result ends in a draw, you are guaranteed to get your original stake back. If say, however, you bet on your preferred tam to win by two clear goals, then you receive your winnings plus your stake.
This is also a good opportunity to spread your risk. You can bet on three outcomes as follows.
1. Away Team or Draw
2. Home Team or Draw
3. Home Team or Away Team
Odds are often lower than they would be for a match bet because there are more ways of winning, and a higher chance of winning, so be prepared for that.
Half Time/Full Time
This one is a good one. You can bet on the result at full time and/or half time and you can bet on the home team, the away team or a draw for either half. This is a good bet because you have the potential for winning larger sums for a smaller bet pro rata, as you can see from some of the examples at NetBet
As a word of advice, different online betting sites have differing rules for every type of bet placed, so it is always advisable to read the terms and conditions on each site before placing your bets.
, often referred to as accies, it is not uncommon for punters to win many hundreds or even thousands from a small stake of a couple of pounds. You can bet on multiple match outcomes, goal scorers, goals scored in each half, the final scores at half an full time, how many penalties in a game and so on.
The more permutations entered on the bet, the longer the odds; accies are great fun and can be placed for a small sum, less than the cost of a pie and a pint at the football.
Goal scorer betting
With this type of bet you can have many variations. You can bet on goal scorer and outcome of a single match, or multiple goal scorers in multiple matches, how they will score, in which half, from a free kick, open play or penalty. Great fun, and a potential big win for a small initial wager.
I hope this has given you an insight in to betting terms and how you can place a bet. There are many more types of bets which you can place, but with any bet you place, never exceed what you can afford to lose and always gamble aware
