Does European Roulette Have an Advantage Over Other Casino Games?

18-04-2024

What are the Advantages of Playing European Roulette Over Other Casino Games?

When you enter an online or land-based casino, you have plenty of games to choose from. One of the most popular games is roulette. However, there are a few different variants to choose from. These include:
  • French Roulette
  • European Roulette
  • American Roulette
  • Double-Ball Roulette
  • Mini Roulette
  • Lightning Roulette
If you are an experienced roulette player, then you are likely partial to European Roulette. This is mainly because the European version comes with the smallest house edge. It’s just 2.7%. On the other end of the spectrum, American Roulette has a 5.26% house edge built in. That’s almost twice as high and it is simply due to the American Roulette wheel having one extra zero on it. So, does European Roulette have any advantages over other casino games like slots, blackjack, and baccarat? Well, let’s find out.

House Edge

As we have established, the house edge for European Roulette is 2.7%. In other words, for every $100 you wager on European Roulette over the long haul, you can expect an average return of $97.30. This house edge is higher than it is for most blackjack games. However, the house edge for blackjack varies depending on the number of decks in play, the specific rules, and whether the player uses a perfect strategy. For instance, playing a blackjack game in which the dealer must hit on a soft 17 lowers the house’s edge. Playing a game that allows you to double down after splitting also improves your odds. Still, blackjack’s house edge is generally lower than it is for European Roulette.

The same can be said of Baccarat, which offers a house edge of between 1.06% and 1.24%, except when you bet on ties. Betting on a tie in Baccarat has a whopping 14.36% house edge. When comparing European Roulette to casino poker games like Caribbean Stud and Let It Ride, European Roulette comes out on top. Most casino poker games have a house edge ranging between about 3.5% and 5.5%.

Flexible Odds Structure

One of the best things about roulette is that it allows players to adjust the level of risk and reward. You can go for lower-risk even-money outside bets like Odds/Even, Red Black, or High/Low. Alternatively, you can place riskier straight bets and win a 36 to 1 payout. There are also loads of wagers that fall somewhere in between. You can even diversify your bets by placing a mix of high-risk and low-risk bets. Most other casino games don’t facilitate this type of flexibility although craps does to a certain extent.

Easy to Play

One of the reasons why slot machines typically attract the most players is because they are exceedingly easy to play. Simply place your bet, hit the spin button, and let the Random Number Generator do the rest. The thing is, roulette is a very simple game too. Sure, there are more wagers to choose from, but that’s about it. Roulette is certainly much easier than blackjack because blackjack requires a modicum of skill and you must make certain decisions during each round. The same goes for most other games.

Roulette Systems

Roulette does not require any skill. Nevertheless, many players love to use various strategies and systems. That said, no roulette system or betting strategy has ever proven to be profitable over the long term. Still, using a system or strategy adds an element of fun to the experience. You can also tinker with existing strategies to come up with your very own hybrid.

The Fun Factor

Few casino games are as much fun as European Roulette. After placing your bets, an incredible amount of anticipation builds as the ball spins around, slows down, and then bounces into the winning pocket. On the other hand, games like blackjack, baccarat, and even casino poker games are more mechanical and lack the sheer excitement that is ever-present at the roulette table.
