How to Play Baccarat: Guide for Beginners

26-11-2018

Baccarat is a super easy game to play, and it doesn’t take a James Bond to understand the basics and land on a win. Like many card games available in land-based and online casinos, it is based on chance, and there aren’t any special skills per se needed to for you to win. The same way you would practice playing slots on platforms like the games4free site to have fun without spending your cash, you can get familiar with baccarat for free as well. And when you’re ready, you go for real money action.

One of the reasons why Baccarat is pretty popular among online gamers is the fact that it has a remarkably low house edge of 1.17%. This means that your chances of winning are substantial enough whenever you want to enjoy a few quick rounds. If you are completely unfamiliar with this game, today’s post is a special edition just for you. Dig in if you want to build a rock-solid foundation of how to play the Baccarat game from today onwards!

History of Baccarat

The baccarat game was first played and invented in Italy in the 1400s, and it was named after the lowest score in the game, ‘Zero.’ Later, it was carried across to France, where it became a common past time among the French upper classes. After several decades, many variants of the game were developed with the likes of ‘Chemin de Fer,’ ‘Mini-Baccarat’ and ‘Punto Banco’ being the most played. As we speak, baccarat is the most played game in Macau, and most of the gambling revenue in that region comes from this game.

How Do You Play Baccarat?

Before we start on how the game is played, let’s go through the rules first and gameplay overview. You play the game with a banker which is another name for the dealer in baccarat, and the aim of the game is that you should wager accurately on who has more points at the end of each round. The numbered cards from 1 to 9 feature their face values while the 10s, Jacks, and Aces which have a value of one. Queens and Kings, on the other hand, have a value of zero.

Baccarat is pretty different from other popular card games particularly since the left digits are dropped if the sum of two cards gets to two digits. For example, if you receive an eight and a seven from the banker, the total will not exceed five and not fifteen as in other card games because the left digits are dropped. So, remember that in Baccarat, nine is the highest score you can reach and both the player and the banker can only receive with two cards each. And depending on the total sum of the two cards, many other Baccarat rules will apply. Those rules include:

1. When the banker and player collect a total of nine or eight points, they have a ‘Natural,’ and as a result, both their hands must stand.
2. In case the cards of the player have a total point ranging between zero and five, all of them must draw another card.
3. If the player and banker points total to either six or seven, they must then stand and draw another card.
4. The rules that manage the banker’s hand are a little different as well; for instance, if maybe the player doesn’t draw a third card, the banker will play using the same rules of the player – which is, drawing another card if their hand falls between zero and five and stand if the hand falls at 6 or 7. But then again, if the player draws a third card, a few other game rules will dictate whether the player or the banker draws the third card.
5. If the banker’s cards have points totalling between zero and two and all the participants must draw another card.
6. When a banker has three points, then all the parties will draw an extra card only if the third cards of the player is an eight.
7. In case the dealer has four points, then all the parties will draw an extra card unless the third card drawn by the player is equivalent to zero, one, nine or eight.
8. If the banker has five, then they should draw one more card except when the third card is equivalent four, five, six, or seven.
9. When the banker has six points, then they will all draw another card if the third card drawn by the player was six, seven and in all other cases remaining, no card will be drawn.
10. And if the banker’s cards have total points of seven, then all participants should not draw another card, they must all stand then the winning hand is calculated.

As you can see, the rules are quite different from what you will come across in other regular card games. So, make sure that they are all at your fingertips so that you don’t get confused as you play. When playing, you can either bet on the banker or the player.

Strategy and Tips

While there is no much, you can do to affect the result of the game since it’s a game of chance. However, there are a couple of moves you can pull to minimize on the house edge as much as you can and increase your winning chances and eventual payout. They include:

✓ Avoid placing ‘tie’ bets because they have a high house edge.
✓ Keep going with the banker bet until it becomes a loser.
✓ Manage your funds properly and make sure you bet only what you can afford to lose.
✓ Play in a casino that takes low commissions on your returns.

Baccarat Odds

On Baccarat, betting on the house gives you a house advantage of 1.24% but making a bet on the dealer will offer you a much lower house advantage of only 1.06%. If you bet on a tie, however, the house advantage shoots to a high of 14.4%. While betting on a tie appears risky the reward value is usually the highest.
