John Higgins Proves He Is a Big Contender for UK Champion

Four-time world champion John Higgins continued the excellent record the “Class of 92” have in snooker by reaching the final of the English Open where he was beaten in a final frame decider by Neil Robertson.

Higgins will fancy his chances of having success at the UK Championship next month in York, a tournament he has won three times and been to the final on five occasions.

The Scotsman is currently in a tie for fourth place with Mark Selby for the most wins in Triple Crown events so he will be desperate for more wins in the big three events. Victory at the Barbican Centre will allow him to secure the third place outright, behind only Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis.

Higgins is +1200 in the Betfair snooker betting odds which looks great value, especially when you consider how well he was striking the ball in Milton Keynes. He had excellent victories over O’Sullivan, Ding Junhui and Yan Bingtao in the ranking event.

It is the second straight tournament Higgins has reached a final. He also lost 8-9 to Mark Allen in the Northern Ireland Open, so you can argue he is playing better than anybody in the game right now. His last tournament win came back in February when he won the Players Championship, beating O’Sullivan 10-3 in a dominant display in the final.

Weight Loss Puts Higgins In Great Mental And Physical Shape

Higgins is very proud of his achievements off the table over the last 12 months. He has lost four stone of weight, which may not seem very significant to a snooker player, but O’Sullivan is a great advocate and example of how it can help a player’s game.

The Scot’s turnaround in form is linked to his new lifestyle. He is much fitter around the table, especially in long sessions which can be quite draining for a player. Higgins has been taking part in spinning classes, something he credits towards his healthy weight loss.

At the age of 46, Higgins is showing no signs of declining in the game. He is still one of the players to beat in every tournament he enters and he looks set for a great season.

Jack Lisowski: A Long Shot Worth Considering

It won’t be long before Jack Lisoswki wins a ranking event. He has reached six finals, but has been beaten in each of them, three of which were against his good friend Judd Trump. Jackpot continues to improve on the tour and he shouldn’t be ignored in the UK Championship, especially at odds of +5000.

Lisowski is not afraid of the big occasions. He has an excellent win over Ali Carter in the opening round of the World Championship back in April. In the second round he matched Neil Robertson for two sessions, before the Australian showed his class to close in the match.

There are players above Lisowski in the outright market who are out of form and aren’t open to the same level of improvement as the 30-year-old.

Good luck in the tournament and enjoy all the action from York.
