Two days ago I started my preview with a question - "How far will
Djokovic go?" Well, he reached the final. Now he will try to lift the
trophy and to become the oldest champion in tournament's history with 37
years. But Alcaraz will also be desperate to make more history. He is
bidding to become the first player since Djokovic, Nadal and Federer to
win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same summer, in what is one of
the toughest challenges in the sport. He is young, but I think he will
win here. There are five reasons:
1. Djokovic had a knee surgery just 30 days ago. Despite the victories, he is not fully fit.
2.
Djokovic was solid so far at Wimbledon, but the opponents weren't some
top players. He was lucky as some of them were eliminated (Zverev), some
other suffered injury (Hurkacz and De Minaur), while Alcaraz, Sinner
and Medvedev were in the other part of the draw. Novak hasn't played
against any Top-10 ranked players.
3. Three
of the established Top-4 players are no more in competition. Federer
has retired, while Nadal and Murrey are going in that direction. Just
two weeks ago it seemed Djokovic is also enjoying his last tennis days.
In January he lost to Sinner at Australia Open. Not only lost, but he
was totally outplayed by the Italian. After that, Novak lost his form
and confidence, failing to win anything. Like never before, the Serb has
no trophy in the first six months.
4.
Coach Goran Ivanisevic resigned and Djokovic is still without permanent
coach. It is clear Boris Bosnjakovic is not at desired level. He doesn't
have authority and he is not helpful.
5.
Djokovic has started a "war" with the spectators, but also with the
journalists from BBC. A fiery post-match speech after defeating Rune in
the Round of 16 is not helping. The next day Djokovic walked out of his
BBC interview after just 98 seconds after being asked about the
Wimbledon “booing” row. What I want to say is that most of the crowd will support Alcaraz.
Alcaraz is the only
player to beat Djokovic in his last 51 matches on Central Court. It was
the epic five-set victory in last year’s final. If he was able to beat
Djokovic on Central Court once, he can do it again. Alcaraz is now
stronger, more experienced and more confident player than 12 months ago.
