The Hurricanes won Game 1 by 3-0. Andersen neutralized all the scoring chances from the Flyers but the whole team played a very balanced type of hockey that didn't give a lot of room to the guests. Basically, the Hurricanes played a Hurricanes variety of hockey. I don't expect things to change. They swept the series against the Senators and didn't allow the Canadian team to play in offense. The Flyers are even less potent in the scoring department and the Canes are experts in controlling defensive pace.
The Flyers looked shy, lost, uncreative and a bit frustrated. I will not be too harsh against this young team after just one game but things don't look bright. The guests play the same style of hockey as the Hurricanes but with less efficiency and quality. They probably have the worst power play unit in the whole league and things haven't changed in the post-season. Worse for them, the Hurricanes' penalty kill during the play-offs is at 96%. They successfully neutralized the Sens in this aspect so the Flyers will not have a better chance.
The match-up isn't favorable for goals. The line is still set at 5.5 but I will not be surprised if it goes to 5.0 if Game 2 is another low scoring event. Both teams have excellent goalies that perform at +93% SV and the guests had issues in creating chances in Game 1. I believe the Canes will win the series by 4-0 or 4-1. Tonight, they should win but I will head for the goals market as the Flyers are yet to prove something in offense.
