Well, on match day 1 I backed Cobh to get a result at Cork, but they lost due to a late-ish goal. My opinion didn't change afterwards, and after match day 2, it still hasn't. I don't think they will offer much this season. A play-off place will be their best hope.
They lost last week away at Cabinteely by a result of 1-0. So they've shown nothing really as it looks like Cobh are going to struggle with them losing their 2nd match 4-0 at home to UCD. So beating Cobh isn't much to shout about at the moment.
Athlone are usually the whipping boys of Irish football but this season should be different. Not only have they made a positive start by drawing 2-2 at UCD and beating Galway 3-1 at home (both serious title contenders this season), they made some cracking signings pre-season.
Their main signings in my opinion are Michael Schlingermann, a goalkeeper who has Premier Division experience with Sligo. Derek Daly, who has Premier Division experience with Bray and Waterford. Shane Barnes, who scored 5 goals in 17 matches for Cabinteely last season in this division. Kurtis Byrne, who has experience for the best clubs in Northern Ireland (Linfield), Republic of Ireland (Dundalk) & Wales (TNS). Lastly, Stephen Meaney, who has many games for Drogheda in both divisions. Meaney already has 3 goals in 2 games for Athlone.
They've built quite a team and for me, they have more about them than Cork right now.
