Eldense are newly promoted after finishing top of the Primera Federación last season. Their first three games in Segunda have produced one winless run: a 3-0 defeat away to Almería (0.63 xG), a 2-2 draw at home against Cádiz (1.31 xG), and a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Leganés (0.69 xG).
Mallorca this season: win 2-0 vs Valladolid, lose 2-0 vs Granada and win 3-0 vs Ceuta.
Eldense are not a bad team, but they have made some moves to strengthen the squad. They recently signed defender Iker Recio from Cádiz, as well as striker Rubio Waldo from AEK Larnaca. Waldo is now 31 and is approaching the latter stages of his career. He scored just twice for AEK, although he did have a good season at Tenerife four years ago. However, across the last three seasons, he has scored just five goals in total.
They have also brought in 20-year-old Athletic striker Olabarrieta on loan. He spent last season on loan at Andorra, where he scored one goal.
Mallorca, meanwhile, are newly relegated from La Liga and are clearly one of the main promotion contenders this season. They have lost a number of players following relegation, but they have also put together a strong squad for the second tier, with several new signings and plenty of loan deals.
The idea is clearly to push for an immediate return to La Liga and, if they achieve that, reinvest some of the money generated from player sales into building a competitive squad for the top flight.
Among their new additions are Alberto Moreno (Como), Adam Buksa (Udinese), who scored in the last round, Adrián Liso (Zaragoza), Arnau Tenas (Villarreal), Alex Sala (Lecce), Antoniu Roca (Espanyol), Soumahoro (Hamburg), Puigmal (Almería) and Larin (Southampton), among others.
Mallorca have enough quality to put together a very strong starting XI. Tenas should provide quality in goal, while Valjent, Raíllo and either Lato or Soumahoro give them plenty of options in defence.
In midfield, Pablo Torre is an important player, while Morlanes and Alex Sala are two of the more technically gifted creative midfielders in the division. Sala, in particular, put in an excellent performance against Ceuta.
Up front, it is impossible not to mention Muriqi, but Mallorca have also added Adrián Fuentes from Córdoba and Buksa. Both offer a similar profile: big, physical strikers who can provide a strong focal point in attack. Abdón Prats is also still at the club, so I expect most of the minutes up front to be shared between those players, alongside the other attacking options in the squad.
**Overall, I believe Mallorca have a significantly stronger squad than Eldense in terms of quality.** They also have a very clear objective this season: promotion, and I have little doubt they will be competing for it.
Eldense, on the other hand, should be focused primarily on avoiding relegation in their first season back in Segunda.
I know away games in the Spanish second tier are never easy, which is why I'm taking the draw as some protection here. **But my main angle is a Mallorca win.** I really liked what I saw from them against Ceuta, where they controlled the game from start to finish, and I expect them to have too much quality for Eldense.
