FC Ulaanbaatar showed clear dominance in the Mongolian Premier League last season, finishing with a record of 17 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses from 22 matches. They scored 81 goals, conceded only 19, collected 53 points and finished with an impressive goal difference of +62. By comparison, Hang Yuen finished second in the Taiwan Football Premier League with 13 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses. The overall gap between the two domestic leagues may not be huge, but Ulaanbaatar were clearly the more dominant side within their own competition. Their attack was especially strong, averaging nearly 3.7 goals per game, and once they are able to establish their preferred rhythm, they are capable of creating sustained pressure and a high volume of chances.

Ulaanbaatar’s biggest advantage also comes from playing at home. The match will be held at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, a venue that is regularly used in Mongolian domestic football. The hosts are very familiar with the artificial surface, including the speed of the ball, the bounce and the trajectory of longer passes. In terms of personnel, the team have retained key players such as striker Mijiddorj Oyunbaatar, midfielder Gandulga Ganbaatar and Bat-Orgil, while the squad also contains five players with national-team-level experience. Spanish head coach Mario Peso took charge in April and quickly guided the club to the league title. He has also previously worked in Taiwanese football, so he already has a good understanding of the technical style, build-up patterns and general tempo of Taiwanese teams.

Hang Yuen, on the other hand, have suffered serious losses during the off-season. Their top scorer from last season, Kang Tae-won, scored 12 league goals and won the Golden Boot, but has since moved to Kaohsiung Attackers. Former captain and first-choice centre-back Kwon Seung-sung has also left the club. He had been almost ever-present over the past two seasons and was one of the most important organisers in Hang Yuen’s defensive line. Japanese attacker Genki Tateiwa has departed as well. As a result, Hang Yuen have simultaneously lost their leading scorer, their defensive leader and an important wide attacking option.

Previous continental meetings also show that Mongolian teams are not intimidated by strong Taiwanese opposition when playing in Ulaanbaatar. In 2023, Tainan City travelled here and suffered a 3-1 defeat to FC Ulaanbaatar, before later winning the reverse fixture 3-0 back in Taiwan.
