Slovenia had the worst qualifications for a big competition in their history after they were crowned European Champions in 2017. They didn't play in the World Cup because of those qualifications, but now they have more important ones - for the Olympic Games. Before that tournament, they will start the qualifications for the Eurobasket in 2021. It's normal that the squads will be different, but many players who will play in these qualifications will also play in the others. Dragic officially retired from the national team, I have no info about Randolph and Vidmar who are not among the called players, but they have new American in the roster who will be huge reinforcement and probably the key player in this team without Doncic and Dragic. He's Jordan Morgan from Pınar Karşıyaka, the second placed team in Turkey. He has excellent season there. Edo Muric is the new captain of the team, Blazic, Prepelic, Dimec have more international experience than the others. Blaz Mesicek should get more minutes, he plays very good in Mega.
Hungary has more or less the same roster for years. They added Jarrod Jones to the team to help them in the rim. Hanga is not in the team, but Vojvoda, Keller, Ferencz, Eilingsfeld and Perl are in the team. They had solid qualifications for the World Cup, winning 6 from 12 matches in a group with Italy, Poland, Netherlands, Croatia and the dominant Lithuania.
Austria and Ukraine are the other 2 teams in this group, so it's real to expect Slovenia, Ukraine and Hungary to go through. This is going to be the first match, so there won't be calculations. I expect Slovenia to try to win all 6 matches and show who is who in this beautiful sport. Maybe they don't have 50 players to have more options like they had in the past, but they have their first big trophy with this generation, no matter that the key men are not available at the moment. I believe that Blazic, Prepelic, Muric and Morgan are much better players than the Hungarians, so I expect a winning start for the European champions.
