There is little doubt that Mexico are the favourites, but opening matches often take on a life of their own, and I believe the favourite is priced too low here. Mexico have a significant advantage from home conditions and altitude, but they do not create a great deal offensively. In only one of their last twelve matches have they recorded an xG above 2.0. Even against teams like Panama and Honduras, they have been around 1.0 xG and have secured narrow 1–0 wins.

South Africa are a very tight defensive team that generally keeps matches close against all opponents. They were unlucky in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 against Cameroon despite winning the xG battle 1.76–1.09. They also lost to Egypt, but were unfortunate there as well. With 18–6 in shots and 2.02 vs 0.74 in xG, they produced strong numbers against a team as strong as Egypt, led by Salah.

I believe South Africa are underrated in this matchup. Several handicap options are worth considering, but I’m going with South Africa +1. That gives us a refund in the event of a one-goal defeat. I see this as playable down to 1.95.
