Pafos vs Red Bull Salzburg    (half-won)

Salzburg are the stronger side overall and won the first leg 1–0 at home, but the match was far less comfortable than the scoreline suggests. Salzburg had 59% possession, led 13–7 in shots and 13–0 in corners, yet managed only three efforts on target. They needed until the 88th minute for substitute striker Haris Tabaković to score the winner. Pafos maintained a compact defensive structure for most of the game and even had opportunities to take the lead, showing that the actual gap between the sides was not particularly wide.

Pafos’ biggest advantage in the return leg is their home ground. In the previous round, they lost the first leg 2–0 away to Hajduk Split but produced a remarkable 4–0 comeback at the Alphamega Stadium. Guga, David Goldar, Biel and João Correia were all on target, proving that Pafos can remain tactically balanced even when they are forced to attack. The team also competed in the Champions League league phase last season, losing only 1–0 away to Chelsea and causing Juventus plenty of problems. They certainly do not lack European experience.

Salzburg’s first-leg victory came at a significant cost. Damir Redžić, Edmund Baidoo, Soumaïla Diabaté and Gaoussou Diakité all started but were forced off with physical problems. Substitute Aguilar then suffered a fractured forearm and requires surgery, ruling him out for several weeks. Diabaté and Diakité are also dealing with thigh injuries, weakening Salzburg’s midfield coverage, wing penetration and high pressing.

The schedule and conditions also favour Pafos. The Cypriot league has not yet started, allowing the hosts to focus entirely on Europe. Salzburg, meanwhile, drew 1–1 with Wolfsberger at the weekend and must now play in Limassol, where the evening temperature is expected to be close to 30°C. These conditions will increase the physical burden on Salzburg’s young squad and make it difficult to maintain an intense press for 90 minutes.

Despite trailing by one goal, Pafos do not need to take unnecessary risks from the start. If David Luiz, Goldar and Šunjić can first stabilise the defence, Biel, Guga and Dragomir can gradually increase the attacking pressure. Pafos have every chance of avoiding defeat over 90 minutes. Salzburg remain the more likely side to qualify, but considering the first-leg performance, the visitors’ injuries, Pafos’ comeback ability at home and the hot conditions, backing the hosts with a handicap looks more reasonable.
