Rosario Central vs Corinthians    (lost)

Corinthians do not need to go to Argentina looking for a win at all costs, because a draw would be a perfectly acceptable result and even a narrow defeat would keep the tie open for the second leg. For that reason, I do not expect the Brazilian side to press high for 90 minutes, commit many players ahead of the ball or constantly accept transitions. The most logical scenario is a relatively cautious Corinthians, trying to control the central spaces, slow the tempo down in certain periods and carefully choose the moments when they break forward.

Rosario had a very competent group stage, finishing with 13 points from six matches, and built that campaign mainly on an extremely consistent defensive base. They conceded only one goal throughout the entire group stage and put together five consecutive clean sheets. They have shown the ability to protect leads and keep opponents away from genuinely dangerous finishing zones. In a match where Corinthians are expected to take few risks, that characteristic carries significant weight.

Rosario should once again use Ángel Di María in a role with freedom to appear between the right channel and interior zones, with Jaminton Campaz providing width and 1v1 threat on the opposite side, and Copetti acting as the more aggressive reference inside the box. The simultaneous presence of Di María and Campaz creates an interesting problem for a block that wants to defend deep: if Corinthians close the central corridor too much to limit Di María, they allow Campaz to receive in 1v1 situations; if they open up too much to control the wide areas, they start offering space between midfielder and full-back for the Argentine to receive facing forward. That does not mean Rosario will create chances with every attack, but it gives them different ways to break down a team that will probably spend long periods behind the ball.

Memphis Depay has already left the club and Yuri Alberto is injured, removing two of Corinthians’ main attacking references, while players such as Garro and Breno Bidon will have to take on much of the creative responsibility.
