Petit enters the new season with an idea already implemented at Santa Clara, while João Gião begins a new cycle at Nacional and is still looking to consolidate important processes. The Madeira side’s coach was clear in his preview: he acknowledged progress in the first phase of build-up, but admitted that the team still does not press or create chances in the way he wants. That point is relevant, especially because the opponent is precisely a physically strong side, quick in attack and with more consolidated behaviours.

Pre-season reinforces that difference in momentum. Santa Clara finished their preparation with five wins and two draws, 15 goals scored and only three conceded, scoring in every match. Nacional, by contrast, won only one of their seven preparation games, which increases the doubts over the assimilation of the new ideas and their immediate ability to compete away from home.

There is also an important home/away precedent from last season. Santa Clara collected approximately two-thirds of their points in São Miguel, showing themselves to be much stronger in front of their own fans. Nacional, meanwhile, picked up only 14 points from 17 away matches and lost nine of them, a record that confirms their competitive difficulties away from Madeira.

Nacional’s squad also requires a cautious reading. The departure of Jesús Ramírez, the team’s top scorer in 2025/26, removes an important attacking reference precisely at a time when João Gião continues to publicly acknowledge the need to strengthen the attack. In addition, José Gomes arrived this week with physical problems and Ulisses was also recovering. The main issue is not only individual, but structural: Nacional have lost attacking weight at a moment when they are still trying to improve chance creation, pressing and their reaction after losing possession.

Tactically, the favourable scenario for Santa Clara does not necessarily depend on absolute dominance of possession, but rather on knowing where and when to accelerate. A Petit side already familiar with its behaviours can exploit mistakes in Nacional’s first phase of build-up, win second balls and attack quickly against a structure that is still trying to synchronise its press and defensive transition moments.

Therefore, Santa Clara arrive with greater continuity, better recent dynamics, physical superiority and a more consolidated model. Nacional have room to grow, but at this stage they still present too many doubts in their attacking process, pressing and adaptation to the new cycle.
