Despite the whole universe being against him (except for the crowd) Zverev managed to scramble precious win in what was cirkus of a match to put it mildly. In WTA-ish style match up, Zverev managed to make umpire go down at least 6-7x, to call the supervisors, to make 40+ unforced errors, to lose serve 4x and to offer a whooping 15 break points. I gotta give it to him, after he was robbed of the first set (double bounce on set point) he somehow managed to collect himself and despite everything mentioned above, advance further. But at what cost?
Match up against Zhang can and will be totaly different, however we should take a couple of factors into consideration. Gaston used his 'sneaky' style as long as he could today, but lack of the actuall fire power was his main issue. With Zverev helping in great matter from the other side, spraying everything he can in the net or outside of the court (missed 5-6 ridiculously easy shots) he just didn't capitalize.
I didn't notice Zverev having greater issues with his knee today, even though he had his band around it, the question remains for tomorrow. Zverev initialy wanted to start later because of it, had a day's rest between his matches, but is now forced to face Zhang inmediately after his near apocalyptic match. Knee situation can drasticly change because although he didn't clock 3 hours today, he did ran A LOT, especisly to the net due to Hugo's drop shots from both sides.
Zhang doesn't have variety like Gaston, but has by far superior serve and can match Zverev's striking from the baseline as far as power is concerned.
Now, I'm not saying Zverev will repeat his horrific performance, but there is more indications that he will underperform than other way around. It is his home town, he won this tournament, BUT, he also has Olympic games just around the corner. I'm not sure if he is ready to risk it all for 500 tournament.
It is true that Zverev defends the title and haven't lost a QF in Hamburg (3-0) but sometimes, giving the situation, you just have to go against the pure stats. Zhang played 2 comfortable matches and I said earlier that Zverev is the player to be opposed here but wanted to wait for the right moment. Can Zhang be the guy? We'll see, but at this price and with things mentioned above, I am willing to stake my money without any regreats since I am not sure if Zverev (besedes all) can handle another physical battle.
