Start of the CONCACAF Champions League qualifications.
Alpha United are absolute debutants and first team from Guyana ever in this competition as 2 years ago this country didn't have any local championship at all. In 2009 - 2011 Alpha United participated in the CFU Club Championship (Caribbean competition), without some notable results and facing other "powerful" opponents from Haiti, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rico can't give us any decent hint. The team hasn't played ever on such serious level so we can only guess what it will be but almost for sure "The Hammer" will be too weak for such a challenge. Even the fact that the club couldn't organize a normal travel to Costa Rica and players arrived separately from different directions (some from Panama, others from Trinidad and Tobago) say a lot.
Herediano who are one of the top historically teams in Costa Rica are quite disappoitning in the recent years yet managed to qualify for the CONCACAF CL and announcing ambitions to make a good run in the competition. They added some experienced reinforcemens for the new season - Carlos Castro (48 games for the NT, had stays in Europe too in Rubin Kazan and Haugesund), Pablo Salazar and the Brazilian striker Anderson Andrade who was last playing in Valletta FC. In addition to Jose Cancela (known from Cruz Azul, New England Revolution, Colorado Rapids etc.) now Herediano look having a quite decent selection that would be shame to face any problems with opponents like this.
I know that Costa Rican teams are not much reliable and often making, to say at least, strange games, another thing is as sport in this country becomes dependant on Asian investors (for example the new beatiful stadium in San Jose on which this game will be played was made with Chinese money) which can have consequences but in normal conditions Cancela, Andrade and the other Brazilian striker Jorge Barbosa must cope with ease with such low-profile and inexperienced team scoring at least 2-3 goals.
