First round of the Mexican Clausura. Toluca set as big favorites exclusively because their name, hosting a relegation candidate and the expectations finally to do something better after year and a half quite poor period but just "must" is not enough. The fact is Toluca had very poor last 3 campaigns (Apertura 2010, Clausura 2011 and Apertura 2011) where they were mediocre and weren't even close to reach the playoffs. In Apertura the team won just 4 from total 17 games and finished 13th. What are the cards for Clausura? Except the new coach (Wilson Graniolatti) Toluca continue with the same team which disappointed so far, no serious signups, most "notable" being Gonzalo Porras from the Uruguayan minnows River Plate.
Estudiantes Tecos weren't exactly the worst team in Apertura (even had more wins than Toluca) but the continuous bad results through the years makes them start on last place in the relegation table and the visitors will dig hard for every point to keep their place in Primera. The board took measures to strengthen the team, also with a new coach - Jose Luis Salgado, plus many new players with good experience behind. New reinforcements are the topscorer of Cerro Porteno and Paraguayan international Fredy Bareiro, Edgar Solis, José Antonio Castro, Alejandro Castro, Gerardo Galindo, Gabriel Pereyra, Mitchell Vázquez. The number of players who left is shorter - Herculez Gomez, Jorge Zamogilny, Lucas Bovaglio.
Estudiantes weren't scared at all by away games in Apertura and actually won 4 from 9, now again declaring aim for 3 points in this visit and nothing else. Toluca may have bigger ambitions but haven't shown anything yet to justify such low odds on their side, so taking a safer handicap and small stake because it is first round seems OK.
