Is there value in tennis’ outright markets?
30-08-2022
Tennis is a sport that is watched by millions of people around the world and played by just as many. Indeed, this sport has captured the world’s imagination and provided people with enthralling entertainment. In addition to that, it is also one of the sports that people bet on the most with a particular focus on the year’s grand slams which undoubtedly attract the most interest.
For further proof, just look at the most up-to-date
tennis betting odds that list the prices for the 2023 Australian Open despite the tournament still being months away. On this occasion, those odds price Novak Djokovic to win at 11/8. In reality, those odds would have been put on the site the day after the previous edition of the tournament ended.
So whilst the latest
tennis tips may focus on a potential winner just before a grand slam is played, the outright odds would have been available up to a year in advance. With this in mind, is there any value to be found in these outright odds?
The answer has to be yes, but you’ll have to play the long game and show a fair amount of patience for your bet to land. This is particularly true in the men’s game as the women’s category allows you to be a bit more flexible in the build-up to a grand slam. More on that later.
Men`s outright odds
Essentially, the men’s division has been dominated by three players over the last 19 years. Cast your mind back to Roger Federer’s first grand slam win in 2003, since then, the swiss champion, Djokovic and Rafa Nadal have combined to win 63 out of a possible 76 grand slams with only Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray winning more than one in that time.
To say it has been one-way traffic would be putting it mildly and this is why there hasn’t been a significant amount on offer in terms of value in the outright odds. In short, there have been very few players who have spontaneously come out of the pack to win, with Dominic Thiem being one of the best picks for those who backed him to win the 2020 US Open. However, odds like the 11/8 for Djokovic are a lot more common.
You can of course still make a profit from this bet, but as initially alluded to, you have to jump on these odds when they’re first listed given that the price on these seemingly superhuman athletes will only come down as the grand slams approach. It should be pointed out that Federer’s dominant performance in the Big Three has more or less come to an end but Djokovic and Nadal are still the men to beat with both men sharing the three titles so far this year between them.
Indeed, Nadal was able to win Roland Garros whilst Djokovic stormed to
victory at Wimbledon.
Women`s outright odds
As for the women’s game, there is far more value to be found in the outright markets owing to the fact that this enthralling division produces different winners during almost every grand slam. This is especially true now that the indomitable Serena Williams
has retired and a look at the odds on the Australian Open will prove as much with the favourite at a price of 10/3.
Instead, the tip for the women`s category would be to stay on top of who the form horses are in order to capitalize on the generous outright market.
