Arsenal’s Top Calibre: The 5 Greatest Gunners Players of All Time

14-03-2025

Arsenal Football Club is one of the most historic and successful teams in English football. With a legacy spanning over a century, the Gunners have produced some of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.

While there have been countless incredible talents in Arsenal’s history, five players stand out as the greatest to ever wear the red and white. Let’s take a closer look at the top five Gunners of all time, their key stats, and their most unforgettable moments on the pitch.

1. Thierry Henry

Key Stats:
Years active at Arsenal: 1999–2007, 2012 (loan)
Appearances: 377
Goals: 228 (Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer)
Major honors: 2 Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups

There is no doubt that Thierry Henry deserves the top spot on the list of the all-time greatest Gunners. The French striker redefined what it meant to be a world-class forward, combining pace, technical brilliance, and a killer instinct in front of goal.

In 2004, Henry helped Arsenal make history during their “invincibles” season, in which they never lost a match. During a crucial match against Liverpool at Highbury, the Reds were leading 2-1. Henry single-handedly turned the game around with a stunning hat-trick. His solo goal, in which he weaved past multiple defenders before coolly finishing, is recognized as one of the best goals in English football history.

Just a week later, Henry scored four goals in a single match against Leeds. In the last 5 games of that season, he would score four more goals, bringing the undefeated campaign to a close.

His 228 goals remain the highest tally in Arsenal’s history.

2. Dennis Bergkamp

Key Stats:
Years active at Arsenal: 1995–2006
Appearances: 423
Goals: 120
Major honors: 3 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups

Dennis Bergkamp was the definition of elegance on the football pitch, and his intelligence was the perfect counterpart to his teammate Thierry Henry’s brute force as an attacker. The duo formed one of the most lethal attacking partnerships in Arsenal’s history. Together, they climbed the ranks to become Arsenal’s two greatest players of all time.

Many of Bergkamp’s goals are considered legendary, though his most famous came against Newcastle United in 2002. In what is widely regarded as one of the greatest goals in Premier League history, Bergkamp produced a breathtaking turn past his defender before slotting the ball into the net.

3. Ian Wright

Key Stats:
Years active at Arsenal: 1991–1998
Appearances: 288
Goals: 185
Major honors: 1 Premier League title, 2 FA Cups

Before Thierry Henry took over the goal-scoring record, Ian Wright was Arsenal’s main man. He scored 185 goals in just 288 appearances—and he did it in a way fans will never forget.

He broke Cliff Bastin’s long-standing record to become Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer in 1997 in a match against Bolton Wanderers. Wright scored his 179th Arsenal goal, he lifted his shirt to reveal a vest that read, “179—Just Done It.”

Wright was known for his infectious personality and his ability to score from anywhere. Defenders had no idea what was coming. This made Wright a fan favorite and turned Arsenal matches into must-see football far beyond the team’s fanbase.

4. Tony Adams

Key Stats:
Years active at Arsenal: 1983–2002
Appearances: 672
Goals: 49
Major honors: 4 Premier League titles, 3 FA Cups

Tony Adams was probably Arsenal’s greatest defender ever. But he was also the heart and soul of the Gunners. He spent his entire two-decade career at the club, winning the loyalty of fans and embodying leadership as captain.

As captain, Adams led Arsenal to multiple league titles, including the famous 1997–98 double-winning season when the Gunners also took home the FA Cup. On the final day of that season, Arsenal needed a victory to seal the title. While not a goal scorer, Adams stepped up to the challenge. Charging forward from defense, he received a perfect pass from Steve Bould and smashed the ball into the net. The image of Adams standing with arms raised in triumph is one of the most iconic in Arsenal’s history.

5. Patrick Vieira

Key Stats:
Years active at Arsenal: 1996–2005
Appearances: 406
Goals: 34
Major honors: 3 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups

Patrick Vieira was the engine of Arsenal’s midfield for nearly a decade. As captain of the famous “Invincibles” team, he played a crucial role in Arsenal’s 49-game unbeaten run, which remains one of the greatest achievements in English football.

The season after, he would cement his legacy during his final game for Arsenal—the 2005 FA Cup final against Manchester United.

After a tense 120 minutes without a goal, the match went to penalties. It was Vieira who stepped up to take the decisive spot-kick. With one final strike, he secured Arsenal’s victory, lifting the FA Cup before departing for Juventus.
